Episode 403 - Record

Fade in:

Int. Ship - Jerry’s quarters - Late

Jerry struggles to drown out the noise. He tosses around in is bed, grunting and messing up the sheets. The chaotic sound of random pops and bursts echo through the room. Jerry opens his eyes, surrendering to the sound. He sits up, annoyed.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - Moments Later

Jerry approaches the cockpit, shivering in the cold. He is wearing a tee-shirt, shorts and flip-flops. He flops down in the passenger seat, across from his android captain, Amadeus.  Blue bits of plasma strike into the windshield of the ship, bursting into small balls of fire before harmlessly dissipating into space. Each strike causes a burst of sound similar to what Jerry heard in his quarters, only less muffled here. Up here it seems less chaotic; more serene and more ordered. Jerry looks with calmness at the free show.

Jerry

Still?

Amadeus

Yes.

Jerry

Was there anything left?

Amadeus

No.

Jerry

No perimeter stations? Ships?

Amadeus

No.

Jerry

Have you reported to central?

Amadeus

Preliminary only.

Jerry

Waiting to find something?

Amadeus

Yes.

Jerry

Do you think you will?

Amadeus

No.

Cut to:

Ext. Ship - Space

An exterior shot reveals the ship to be in the midst of a large debris field. Blue plasma is lingering in space as the ship steers forward. Small bits of metal are located here and there. As the angle widens, it is clear that this is the debris of a space station. The camera pans over to a small bit of metal which rolls over to reveal the letters PTM.

[End Teaser]

[Begin Act 1]

Fade In:

Int. PTM Central Command - Berkley’s Office

General Berkley slams his hand down on the table. General Ryan Berkley is Amadeus’s direct superior. He took over when the war ended, as the old general had been killed and everyone else was so burnt out that they didn’t want the job. He absolutely loathes the idea of Amadeus being in charge of anything, and would prefer to use him as an appliance. He regularly refuses to deal with the robot and tries on numerous occasions to have him decommissioned.

Berkley

Impossible! How could they get away with this!?

The angle widens to reveal Berkley standing in his office. He glances up at the massive monitor affixed to his wall, displaying a live image of Amadeus and Jerry sitting in the ship’s cockpit. Berkley is extraordinarily flustered.

Berkley

How could a single Confederation ship destroy one of our most important stations?

Amadeus

The explosion began in the ore processing station, triggered by an AA-26 Torpedo. It took seventeen seconds for…

Berkley

[Annoyed]

No, I don’t care about how they actually did it, you moron!

I’m talking about how they managed to do it before our people shot them out of the sky!

Jerry

To be honest we weren’t able to find much to salvage in the debris. The only reason we know a Confederate ship was involved is all of the radiation left in the area. Sir, could this be an act of war?

Berkley

I’ve already spoken to the Confederate Senate (the faction that Blake controlled during the big PTM war. They are now in peacetime, though no one knows how long it will last).  They denounce the incident as their own; say it was a rogue ship, but I don’t want to rule anything out.

Jerry

Well if the ship wasn’t theirs, then it might not have gotten far.

Someone should go looking for it.

Berkley

[Glancing at Amadeus]

I’d like to talk to Reynolds alone for a moment if I can.

Jerry is a bit angered at the request, but not surprised.

Amadeus

Of course.

Amadeus stands and exits the cockpit, disappearing from Berkley’s view.

Jerry

Sir, with all due respect, Amadeus is the captain.
He should really be the one to…

Berkley

Look, I really don’t care about hurting that bucket of bolts’ “feelings”. And I wouldn’t trust him with a job further than I could throw him. Now, word of this incident is going to get out soon enough, but I don’t want to send the world into panic by sending a full squad of ships in. I want you, Reynolds, to take the robot and investigate. I’ll have a research vessel sent to your coordinates as soon as possible to help with the investigation. If that ship is anywhere in the area, I want you to find it and contact me personally. Under absolutely no circumstances are you to engage that ship. Is that understood?

Jerry

Yes sir. Absolutely.

Berkley

Good. Get to work.

Cut to:

Ext. Ship – Space - Later that Day

The Ship lingers in the space station debris field. The plasma storm seems to have ceased, leaving only hunks of metal and debris. The angle tightens on the ship’s cockpit.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - Continuous

Jerry looks over at Amadeus, slightly ashamed.

Jerry

You know, you shouldn’t let the General treat you like that.

Amadeus

Like what?

Jerry

Giving me our orders instead of you, sending you out of the room just to give them to me!

Amadeus

The General is my superior.

He is free to conduct himself however he chooses.

Jerry

Yeah, well so are you. That’s all I’m saying.

The console begins to beep, signaling with a flashing yellow light. Jerry reaches for it and presses a few buttons on his computer terminal.

Jerry

Looks like we have a ship coming in.

Amadeus

What class is it?

Jerry

I don’t know. They’re using some sort of jammer.

I’m surprised we picked anything up at all.

Amadeus

Ready weapons.

Jerry

We’re not supposed to engage.

Amadeus

The other ship is unaware of that.

Jerry smirks and presses a few buttons on his computer terminal. Amadeus’s hands tighten on the flight controls.

Amadeus

Where is it?

Jerry

They’ll be coming about our starboard side in eight seconds.

Amadeus

Bring us about, slowly. I do not want to alert them.

Jerry

Right.

Jerry stops working at his terminal and grabs his flight controls.

Cut to:

Ext. Debris Field

The Ship slowly turns toward its starboard side as a slightly larger vessel comes across its bow about a kilometer away.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - Continuous

Amadeus presses the hailing button on his computer terminal. The terminal beeps, and he speaks.

Amadeus

Unidentified vessel, this is the PTM cruiser Ryuu-3.

Shut down your engines and identify yourselves.

Amadeus and Jerry watch as the ship slows and turns to face the Ship. It lingers for a moment; its hulking frame intimidating the relatively smaller PTM Cruiser.

Jerry

[Panicked]

Blue…

Amadeus

Wait a moment.

The computer terminal beeps again.

Jerry

They’re answering.

Amadeus

Accept.

Jerry presses a button on his terminal. The image of a young female captain is projected onto the window. To Jerry’s surprise, the captain and a few of her crew behind her are wearing PTM uniforms. She smiles.

Female Captain

You must be Amadeus.

I’m Captain Telsia of the PTM Research Vessel Borealis.

I’m sorry for the secrecy, but this is unsafe water.

Just looking after my crew.

Amadeus turns to Jerry, who nods at him.

Jerry

Registered ship, registered captain. It checks out.

Amadeus turns back to the screen to greet the captain.

Amadeus

It was no problem, Captain.

Jerry

You must be the research team General Berkley sent us.

Telsia

Of course.

Amadeus

We were not expecting a team so soon.

Telsia

We were on an exploration mission not far from here.

General Berkley was… insistent that we divert and assist you.

Jerry

Well we definitely appreciate the help.

Amadeus

Shall we initiate docking procedure?

Telsia

Absolutely, let’s make this meeting formal.

Borealis out.

Telsia reaches for an off-screen button, severing the connection. The projection fades from the ship’s duraglass window.

Jerry sits back and relaxes.

Jerry

Well that’s enough to get your heart pumping, huh?

Amadeus turns and glares at Jerry.

Jerry

[Smiling]

…Right.

Cut to:

Ext. Debris Field

The camera swirls around the two PTM ships as the docking corridor from each extends toward the other. They meet in the middle, connecting with a loud clamp. A flush of air is heard pouring into the corridor. The Ship’s lights fade.

Cut to:

Int. Borealis

Amadeus and Jerry stride into the entryway of the Borealis, greeted by Telsia and three of her crewmates. A tall, hulking Native American man named Atsidi, a young blonde pilot named Shelly and a man in a lab coat named Georgiou.

Telsia stands with a smile as she welcomes her guests.

Telsia

Captain Amadeus, first mate Jerry Reynolds; welcome to the Borealis.

[Gesturing to Georgiou] This is my lab assistant, Georgiou.

[and to the blonde] My pilot, Shelly.

[The brute] And our engineer, Atsidi.

Amadeus

It is nice to meet all of you.

Jerry

[Winking at Shelly]

How ya doin’?

Shelly smiles at Jerry, who seems a bit too impressed with the accomplishment. Telsia glares at Shelly, and then turns to Amadeus.

Telsia

Shall we get to work?

Amadeus

Absolutely.

Jerry

Where do we start?

Georgiou

[European, possibly intoxicated]

We recovered the data recorder from the space station a few moments ago. The computer in the lab is analyzing it now. It should be done shortly.

Jerry

That’s weird. We’ve been out here for sixteen hours. Why didn’t we see it?

Shelly

[Still flirting]

Maybe we just looked harder.

Jerry

Oh really?

Telsia

Well, this is a research vessel.

If you’ll both follow me, I’ll show you to the lab.

Telsia turns and leads the group toward the Lab. Shelly watches Jerry as he walks past her, catching his attention.

Shelly

I’ll be seeing you.

Jerry gives her a goofy smile.

Cut to:

Int. Borealis – Lab - Continous

Telsia leads Amadeus, Jerry, Georgiou and Atsidi into the very large and very impressive Borealis lab. 60’’ monitors line every bit of wall space in the otherwise white and sterile room. Rows of lab tables and computers occupy the rest of the room, with lab equipment set on counters along the walls.

Jerry

[Whistles]

Impressive. Much nicer than most PTM research ships I’ve seen.

Telsia

Well as you probably noticed, this isn’t a PTM vessel.

We only commissioned her, at quite a price.

Amadeus

Where is the station’s data recorder?

Georgiou

[Gesturing to a monitor on the wall]

Oh, it’s right over here.

The group walks over to the terminal analyzing the flight recorder, which is wired into the terminal itself. Georgiou begins mashing buttons on the keyboard.

Georgiou

Looks like it’s… just about done analyzing.

I’ll bring it up on the monitor above.

The group stares upward on the monitor as random bits of data and schematics flash on the screen. Georgiou continues typing.

Georgiou

According to this, the explosion was most likely caused by… an AA-26 torpedo; Confederate weapon.

Jerry

Looks like your hunch was right, Blue.

Amadeus

Does it say what class the ship was?

Georgiou

Hold on a moment.

Georgiou continues typing. Telsia stares at Amadeus.

Telsia

You know, Captain, you’re much less intimidating in person.

Amadeus

What do you mean?

Telsia

After the war they told stories of you as a fighting machine; a one man army. I have to say I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Georgiou

All right, here we go.

Georgiou types a command that causes the schematic of a small Confederate cruiser to appear on the monitor. The group looks up at it.

Georgiou

Right before the explosion, the station logged an encounter with a Stallion class Confederate cruiser. No trace of where it came from or where it was headed, I’m afraid.

Telsia

Well there you go, Captain. It was a Confederate ship after all.

Take that back to your general.

Amadeus

We are not finished.

Telsia

What do you mean?

Jerry

It means our boss told us to find that ship, not just tell him what we already knew.

Georgiou

[Sarcastically]

Well good luck. That ship could be on the other side of the sector by now.

Amadeus

May I use that terminal for a moment?

Georgiou

Yeah, sure. Go ahead. I’m not the scientist or anything…

Georgiou steps away from the Terminal. Amadeus begins typing away. A map of the space surrounding the debris field appears on the monitor.

Telsia

What’s he doing?

Jerry

Stallion class ships emit trace amounts of a characteristic neon plasma. Useless when they’re flying, but if they’re on the ground it accumulates; you can track them. It’s a little trick we learned during the war.

Telsia looks surprised. The image on the monitor above closes in on a single, pale blue planet.

Amadeus

Here.

Telsia

Where is that?

Amadeus

Planet ID number 26698-12.

It rests less than a light year from our current position.

Jerry

Well what are we waiting for? Let’s go!

Telsia

Absolutely. We’ll leave immediately.

Amadeus

No. This is a research vessel.

If that ship is hostile, the Ryuu should land first.

Telsia

If you believe it’s necessary.

Jerry

Don’t worry. “One man army”, remember?

Cut to:

Ext. Debris Field - Minutes Later

The docking corridor between the two ships retracts as the Ship pulls away, hurling into deep space.

Cut to:

Ext. Space - Planet 26698-12 - Hours Later

The Ship powers overhead, cruising toward the surface of an icy and uninviting planet.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - Continuous

The air outside fades from black to pale blue as the Ship descends. Jerry and Amadeus both look straight ahead, on a mission and ready to fight.

Jerry

Do you have the coordinates of the ship?

Amadeus

Yes. However, I am not reading a power signature.

Jerry

The ship’s not on? In this weather?

Cut to:

Ext – Planet 26698-12

The terrain is icy and jagged. Harsh winds blow across the landscape. The camera pans over to reveal a Stallion Class cruiser sitting alone in the snow. Its hull is frozen over, icicles hang from its belly. Just behind it, the ship touches down, its retro-thrusters blowing snow and ice everywhere.

The angle tightens on the Ship’s ramp as it lowers. Amadeus and Jerry run down it, rifles in tow. Jerry is dressed in a large padded coat and tall boots.

The two quickly jog over to the hatch of the smaller cruiser, standing on either side of it. Jerry touches it.

Jerry

[Nodding]

Frozen.

Amadeus holds up three fingers with his free hand. He counts down to two, then one before lifting one leg and delivering a massive blow to the hatch. It crumbles beneath the kick, flying inward into the cruiser.

Cut to:

Int. Stallion Cruiser - Corridor

Jerry and Amadeus storm into the dark cruiser, which is only slightly less frozen than its exterior, lifting their guns to fire at a moment’s notice.

Jerry

PTM! Surrender or be fired upon!

The duo quickly make their way to the cockpit of the cruiser, checking the corners as they do. There is no reaction to their presence, no sense of alarm.

Cut to:

Int. Stallion Cruiser - Cockpit

Jerry and Amadeus peer into the cockpit from the corridor. Jerry lowers his weapon and relaxes before turning away. Amadeus lowers his weapon and steps further into the cockpit, as the angle pushes back far enough to reveal two frozen pilots.

Back in the corridor, Jerry pulls out a radio and contacts the Borealis.

Jerry

Borealis, we’ve got an all clear here.

You can land whenever you’re ready.

Shelly

[VO from radio]

Copy that. Sorry to have missed all the heat.

Jerry

I don’t think you need to worry about that.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - continuous

Amadeus and Jerry stare at the holographic projection of General Berkley on their window.

Berkley

I knew it was them all along.

Good work, both of you.

Where’s the research team?

Jerry

They’ll be landing momentarily. We wanted to make sure the area was secure before we let them touch down.

Berkley

Send them my gratitude, too.

I have to say I’m a bit impressed with them.

Amadeus

What do you mean?

Berkley

I sent them orders to depart from Beta Station yesterday.

I didn’t expect them to reach your position so quickly.

Jerry looks at Amadeus, a bit troubled, and then back at Berkley.

Jerry

Beta Station? That sure is impressive, sir.

We’ll be sure to send the message along.

Berkley

Thank you, Reynolds.

Leave the rest of this job to the research team.

Get yourselves home.

Berkley out.

The projection fades. Jerry and Amadeus turn to each other.

Jerry

Beta Station?

Amadeus

The fastest PTM vessel would need three days to reach our position.

Jerry

So who have we been dealing with?

Fade out

ACT II

Fade in

Ext. Planet 26698-12

The camera pans across the barren landscape as the Borealis touches down next to the Ship.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - continuous

Jerry turns to Amadeus with a panicked look on his face as the robot thinks to himself.

Jerry

We’ve got to report them.

Amadeus

[Turning to Jerry]

No. If we get hostile, they may run.

We may not be able to figure out who they are or what happened here.

We’ll play along with them for now, and investigate this for ourselves.

Jerry

[Reassured by Amadeus’s confidence]

Okay. If you think it’s the right way to go.

The communications panel in the cockpit beeps.

Jerry

They’re hailing us. Busted capacitor?

Amadeus

Affirmative.

Amadeus presses a button on the communications panel. A projection of Telsia appears on their window.

Telsia

Captain. It’s good to see you intact.

Amadeus

The crew of the stallion cruiser were frozen, as is the rest of the ship.

Telsia

Their power supply must have been damaged in the skirmish with the station. We’ll know more once we begin salvage operations. We thank you for your help, but we can take it from here.

Jerry

Actually we may need to stay here for a couple of hours. One of our capacitor boards fried during the landing.

Telsia

Oh. I can send Atsidi to help you if you want.

Jerry

No, no. We can handle it. You need your crew on your ship.

Telsia

Understood. Check back in with us before you leave.

Jerry

[Smiling]

Sure thing.

Telsia

Borealis out.

The projection fades. Jerry turns to Amadeus.

Jerry

What now?

Amadeus

Wait for nightfall.

Fade to:

Ext. Planet 26698-12 - Night

The winds of the day have faded; it’s a silent and serene night. The lights from the two ships provide the only illumination.

Cut to:

Int. Borealis – Cockpit - Continuous

Push in on the Borealis’s large cockpit. Telsia stands behind Shelley, who is seated in the pilot’s chair. Telsia looks frustrated.

Shelley

They’re still out there. Do you think they know?

Telsia

We’d know if the PTM was planning to arrest us.

If they do know, they’re not saying anything.

Shelley

[Flirty]

I think we should play it safe.

Telsia

[Smiling]

I think you’re right.

Cut to:

Ext. Planet 26698-12 - Continuous

The port side hatch of Ami’s ship slides open. Amadeus jumps down into the snow, rifle at his side. He stays close to the side of the ship to avoid being seen. He rushes over to the stallion cruiser. He glances into the destroyed hatch, seeing nothing.

Amadeus

I’m entering the ship now.

Jerry [VO from radio]

All right, good.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - Continuous

We reveal Jerry, watching Amadeus’s actions through the robot’s eyes via a camera feed on the ships console.

Jerry

I’ve got good picture here, but it’s a little dark.

Cut to:

Int – Stallion Cruiser – Continuous

Amadeus steps into the frozen ship, the dome above his faceplate sliding back to reveal a flashlight. It activates.

Jerry [VO from radio]

Much better.

Amadeus paces slowly through the ship, taking care not to be seen.

Amadeus

I don’t see anyone on the ship.

Jerry

Good. I don’t need to see you shoot anyone today.

Amadeus reaches a small ladder leading down covered by a hatch. He bends down to the hatch and tears it off, tossing it aside.

Amadeus

I’m descending into the armory now.

Cut to:

Int. Stallion Cruiser - Armory – Continuous

Amadeus climbs down the ladder. He jumps down the last couple of steps and turns around to face the armory. He looks around with his rifle at the ready before heading to the missile bay.

Jerry [VO through radio]

What do you see?

Amadeus

Nothing. It’s missing.

Jerry [VO through radio]

What? The torpedo?

Of course it is, they launched it into the station. Remember?

Amadeus

No, not the torpedo. The torpedo launcher is missing.

The angle widens to reveal a missing chunk of the cruiser’s machinery, ripped right out of place.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Continuous

Jerry watches the screen, confused.

Jerry

The… the entire gun is missing?

I don’t understand. Where did it go?

Cut to:

Int. Stallion Cruiser – Continuous

Amadeus

I think I know.

Male Voice

Hold it!

The angle reverses to show Atsidi standing behind Amadeus, pointing a rifle right at him. Amadeus lets go of his gun and lets it fall to his side with a thud. He raises his hand in surrender.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Continuous

Jerry looks at the screen, now in a slight panic.

Jerry

Ami? Who was that? What’s going on?

Get back to the *UMF!*

Jerry is cold cocked in the side of the head with a very large wrench. He falls out of his chair, onto the floor revealing Shelly standing behind him. She smiles.

Shelley

Told you I’d see ya again.

Fade Out

ACT III

Fade in

Int. Borealis – Cockpit - Continuous

Telsia and Georgiou stand in the cockpit, waiting for the rest of their crew to arrive. Shelley enters the cockpit with a large black device.

Shelly

I knocked the boy out and tied him up in the hold.

Got their flight recorder.

Telsia

Good. Georgiou, edit it to look like it was another Confederate cruiser, just like the station.

Georgiou

Will do.

Shelly hands the flight recorder to Georgiou.

Telsia

We’ll drop it off after we blow that ship away; leave it in the wreckage.

Shelly

Where’s Atsidi?

Telsia pulls out her radio and presses a button.

Telsia

Atsidi. Where are you?

Atsidi [VO from radio]

I got the robot. Left him on his ship. I’m on board the Borealis now; closed the hatch behind me.

Telsia

Excellent. Atsidi, get to the bridge as soon as you can.

Shelly, get us out of here.

Shelly

Will do, Captain.

Cut to:

Ext. Planet 26698-12 - Moments Later

The Borealis launches vertically from the icy planet and lifts upward toward space, leaving Ami’s ship and the Stallion Cruiser behind.

Cut to:

Ext. Space – Continuous

Just above the surface of the planet, the Borealis slows and turns, hovering above the landing site.

Cut to:

Int. Borealis - Cockpit – Continuous

Shelly turns to face Telsia, smiling as always.

Shelly

Ready to launch torpedo on your order, Captain.

Telsia

Wait for Atsidi, he should see this too.

The cockpit door slides open behind Telsia. Large footsteps are heard.

Telsia

There you are. What took you so long?

Telsia smiles and turns to face Atsidi. Her smile fades quickly. The angle reverses to reveal Amadeus standing in the doorway. He brings Atsidi’s radio up to his face.

Amadeus

[Speaking in a flawless impression of Atsidi’s voice]

I was busy getting beaten by a PTM captain.

Amadeus drops the radio. It falls to the floor with a thud. He raises his plasma rifle.

Amadeus

You’re under arrest.

Telsia

We’ll see.

Telsia steps aside to reveal Shelly pointing a handgun at Amadeus. Before she can fire, he blasts her with his plasma rifle. She falls out of her chair, unconscious.

Immediately after, Georgiou bursts through the cockpit door with a large pipe, ready to swing it at Amadeus’s head. Amadeus lifts his free hand to deliver a sucker punch. Georgiou falls to the ground, moaning. He raises his weapon back to Telsia, who hides her surprise under a veil of confidence.

Telsia

So you really are a one man army.

The PTM’s finest, hm?

Amadeus

The PTM you betrayed.

You disabled that Confederate Cruiser.

You hid the torpedo launcher on your ship.

That’s how you were able to get so close to the station.

It’s how you killed thousands of innocent people.

Amadeus’s statement stirs Telsia into a previously subdued frenzy.

Telsia

NO! How dare you call me a traitor!

You have no idea what I’m trying to accomplish!

Amadeus

Don’t move.

Telsia

[Turning to the console]

I’m launching that torpedo!

Amadeus points his rifle at the console and fires, frying it. Telsia looks back at him angrily.

Telsia

You don’t get it!

She slams a button on the side of the wall. Before Amadeus can stop her, a laser grid forms in front of Ami, flying into him and knocking him backward out of the cockpit. Telsia grabs Shelley’s gun and the Ship’s flight recorder before running out of the cockpit, past Amadeus, who is still disabled. She heads toward the Borealis’s makeshift armory.

Amadeus struggles to get up to his feet and pursues her. Telsia reaches a door and slams it shut behind her. It locks with a “thunk” sound.

Cut to:

Int. Borealis - Armory – Continuous

Telsia heads over to the Stallion Cruiser’s torpedo launcher, which has been installed on the Borealis. She presses a few buttons on its console. It begins to rev up. She looks back at the door a loud bang comes from behind it.

Telsia

Come on… come on!

The door implodes with a smash, flying forward. Telsia looks back at Amadeus and raises her weapon. Amadeus doesn’t hesitate. He shoots her in the stomach. She falls to the floor, firing at Ami as she does. The blast slams into his leg, tearing machinery apart. He falls to the ground as well. The flight recorder flies out of Telsia’s hand and lands next to Ami.

Telsia crawls incapacitated toward the torpedo console. She presses another button. An error message sounds as the console glows red. Amadeus struggles to sit up.

Amadeus

It won’t fire. I saw to that.

Telsia hangs her head in disappointment, but presses another couple of buttons anyway. The console begins to light up yellow, and she crashes back onto the floor. She crawls toward Amadeus as he struggles to get up.

Telsia

[Nearly unconscious]

I meant it, you know.

When I said I wasn’t a traitor.

Amadeus

You are.

Telsia

I fought in that war, too. I saw my friends killed by the Confederacy just like the rest of my crew. They have to pay for what they’ve done.

Amadeus

By going to war with the PTM again.

Telsia

They’re nothing like they were before. They’d be obliterated. They’d be exterminated. All of them.

Amadeus

It isn’t worth killing innocent citizens.

Telsia

It’s worth it.

It’s worth everything.

It’s why I’m letting that torpedo go off anyway.

Amadeus looks at the torpedo launcher as it revs up even further, preparing to launch the faulty torpedo.

Telsia

When it explodes, the PTM will think it was the Confederacy.

They’ll go to war.

Amadeus

It won’t work.

Telsia

It has to. It has to…

Telsia collapses. Amadeus glares at the torpedo console. It begins a countdown for sixty seconds. He struggles to move, ultimately failing. He looks around frantically, his eyes landing on the flight recorder. He grabs it and tucks it under his chest, flipping his port cover open.

Cut to:

Ext. Space – Continuous

The Borealis lingers in space for a moment before exploding into a beautiful array of blue and red. Debris flies toward the camera, including the intact flight recorder, its shields glowing, surrounded by destroyed bits of Amadeus.

The explosion fades, leaving only a debris field.

Fade to:

Int. Ship – Hold - Continuous

Jerry sits tied up, a large bruise on the side of his head. He slowly comes to as a voice begins to grow louder on the ship’s speakers.

Voice

Hello? This is the PTM Research Vessel Pentagon. We picked up your flight recorder in a debris field orbiting the planet. Are you in need of assistance? Hello? We’re landing at your coordinates momentarily.

Jerry hangs his head in a mix of confusion and relief.

Int. Pentagon - Research Lab

Jerry sits bandaged on an examination table. He looks weary and depressed. The ship’s captain approaches him looking forlorn.

Jerry

Did you find anything?

Captain

No, I’m afraid not. Only the debris from the Borealis.

Jerry

What did you do with Atsidi?

Captain

He’s in the hold for now. I figured we could take him back to Beta Station and let them process him.

Jerry

That’s good… I guess.

Captain

Were you close? The… robot?

Jerry

He was my captain.

Captain

Right… I’m sorry.

The captain starts to walk away, but turns back to Jerry suddenly.

Captain

Oh, I almost forgot. We found your ship’s flight recorder.

There were some weird files we couldn’t quite interpret, they might have been damaged. I had my pilot leave it in your cockpit.

Jerry

Thanks.

Jerry looks at the floor depressed.

Cut to:

Int. Ship – Cockpit - Later

Jerry sits down in the pilot’s chair of the Ship, looking around. He notices the flight recorder in the seat next to him and opens a panel on the console. He places the flight recorder in it and closes it, looking up at the console. A black screen with a single prompt appears at the bottom.

Jerry

That’s weird.

The prompt begins typing on its own.

Prompt

“Beginning schematic download and data compression.”

A wave of schematics and structural diagrams begin to flash across the screen. The angle focuses on Jerry as they reflect off of his face. Elation begins to wash over him. He smiles.

Ext. PTM Headquarters - Later

A sweeping shot of the exterior to establish location. Traffic is heavy, the sun shines. It’s a beautiful day.

Cut to:

Int . Berkley’s Office – Continuous

Jerry sits in the chair in front of Berkley’s desk. Berkley leans in toward him, holding a report on an electronic pad. He tosses it aside.

Berkley

I can’t believe this. A PTM vessel?

Jerry

Well apparently only Telsia was a PTM officer.

The rest were just… hired guns, I suppose.

Berkley

Well, they got what they deserved.

I’ll contact the Confederacy with this information immediately.

It’s too bad, I guess, about your friend.

Jerry

Yeah, thanks.

Berkley

Still. You did an excellent job.

His ship’s yours if you want it, Captain.

Jerry

Thanks, that’s very generous.

But I’m afraid I’ll have to turn it down.

Berkley

Reynolds, don’t let your emotions cloud the fact that you’ve earned this.  I mean, you managed to figure out and secure this situation like a pro.

Jerry

Yeah, about that…

The door to Berkley’s office slides open. A fresh, clean, and slightly more elegant Amadeus steps through the door. Berkley looks up at him as if he’s seen a ghost.

Jerry

It was all him.

Berkley

Amadeus. You’re supposed to be dead.

Amadeus

Are you implying that I was ever alive?

Berkley is at a loss for words. He looks down at Jerry, completely bewildered. Jerry smiles.

Jerry

The research team found a few files on the flight recorder they couldn’t make out. The ship’s computer managed just fine. Big guy downloaded himself into it right before he popped. I guess that means he’s still in charge of his ship, huh?

Berkley looks back at Amadeus, who tilts his head waiting for Berkley to say something.  Berkley doesn’t say a word.

Cut to:

Int. Ship - Later

The Ship rests on a landing pad, preparing to take off. Amadeus grabs the flight controls. Jerry looks over at him.

Jerry

I bet it felt good telling that guy off, didn’t it?

Amadeus remains silent.

Jerry

Oh, that’s right. You don’t “feel” things.

[Smiles]

But I bet it felt good.

Amadeus pushes the Ship’s throttle to maximum. The ship jolts forward.

Cut to:

Ext – PTM HQ

The Ship lifts off of its landing platform and hovers for a moment before rotating away from the HQ and hurling forward into the atmosphere. The camera remains stationary as the ship becomes a spec in the distance, fading away.

Fade to Black
